Engine Specs & MPG
All six trim levels come standard with the same powertrain, which includes a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. It produces 290 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
If that’s not enough power for you, the upper three trim levels are available with an optional 5.7-liter V-8 engine rated at 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. In order to include that engine, the SUV must include Jeep’s four-wheel-drive system, which only comes standard on the top trim. The V-8 works with the same eight-speed automatic transmission.
When equipped with the base V-6 engine, a front-wheel-drive Grand Cherokee L returns an estimated 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, or 22 mpg combined. A four-wheel-drive model’s estimates come in just slightly lower at 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway or 21 mpg combined. With the V-8 engine, the EPA fuel economy estimates come in at 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
Jeep offers several versions of its four-wheel-drive system, which it bundles into packages named Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. The Quadra-Trac I package includes four-wheel drive with a single-speed transfer case, while Quadra-Trac II includes a two-speed transfer case that offers low-range gearing to boost traction and neutral mode capability. The Quadra-Drive II system is similar to Quadra-Trac II but includes a fully automatic high-range four-wheel-drive system.
Towing Capacity
The Grand Cherokee L can also tow a substantial load, putting it ahead of most of its competitors in this area. When equipped with the standard V-6 engine and the right equipment, this SUV can tow up to 6,200 pounds. Upgrading to the V-8 engine increases the towing capacity to 7,200 pounds.
