2021 Jeep Wrangler Overview

From power soft tops to removable doors, the 2021 Wrangler lineup is a mixture of old and new, which is just how Jeep fans like it. Counting this year's special edition models, the Wrangler comes in a staggering 18 different trim configurations. Why so many? Jeep designed the lineup for mass appeal, drawing buyers from such different groups as suburban moms and extreme off-roaders.

Whether you're shopping for a carpool-friendly kid mover or a capable off-roading utility truck, there's a Wrangler in the lineup for you. Jeep's core (and most well-known) Wrangler trims are the Sport, the Sahara, and the Rubicon. The Sport is essentially Jeep's base model trim and the only one you can still buy for under $30,000.

The mid-range Sahara is equipped for daily drivers. Historically, it's considered the luxury trim and the one that most closely resembles a more mainstream SUV. To drive home the point even more, Jeep only offers the Sahara in a 4-door body style. Make no mistake, though: this is still a Trail Rated off-road capable Jeep.

The Rubicon is the Sahara's opposite in just about every way. Available in both a 2-door and 4-door body style, this Wrangler is ideal for serious off-roaders. It features 33-inch all-terrain tires and an upgraded off-road suspension that extend ground clearance to 10.8 inches. It also has electronic locking differentials and an ultra-low crawl ratio for even better off-roading traction.

In addition to the core lineup, Jeep offers several special editions and sub-trims, including the Islander, Willys and Willys Sport, a special 80th Anniversary Edition, and more. Some special editions tweak one of the core trims, like the Sahara Altitude and the Sport Altitude. Generally, these special trims consist of popular equipment bundled together to give buyers an easier shopping experience.

Wrangler 4xe Plug-In Hybrid

The 2021 model year will go down as a historic one for the Jeep brand with the launch of its first-ever hybrid Wrangler. The Wrangler 4xe (pronounced "4 by e") is a plug-in hybrid that not only matches its gas-powered siblings but, in some cases, actually outperforms them. Right out of the gate, Jeep points out the side benefit of off-roading in electric mode: near-silent operation. Navigating a remote trail with zero engine noise is an experience that Jeep fans will love.

The other driving characteristic of the Wrangler 4xe is the instantly available access to 470 lb-ft of torque. Throttles behave differently on electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids; much like a light switch, when you press an EV's "gas" pedal, the vehicle responds instantly. Contrast that with a traditional gas-powered vehicle that takes a beat to accelerate, and you can begin to appreciate the difference. It might take a while to get used to it, but a little bit of acceleration goes a long way on a hybrid.

The Wrangler 4xe is powered by a 2.0-liter I4 DOHC turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection and a companion 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers a 22-mile electric driving range. The powertrain is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard 4x4. The system can deliver reliable power to each wheel as road (or trail) conditions change. Drivers are even safe to navigate up to 30 inches of water without fear of damaging the battery. After all, it's still a Jeep Wrangler.

At just over $50,000, the Wrangler 4xe is far from the most affordable Wrangler in the lineup, but Jeep has committed to working with third-party vendors to expand its charging network in the most unexpected places. The company intends to install charging stations at every Jeep Badge of Honor off-road trailhead, including Moab in Utah. These stations will be solar-powered and free to Jeep customers, furthering Jeep's commitment to fighting climate change.

Wrangler Rubicon 392

If the rugged Wrangler Rubicon doesn't provide quite enough grit for you, check out the beefed-up Rubicon 392. It's a Wrangler Rubicon on steroids, boasting the title of fastest Wrangler ever made. The Rubicon 392 gets its power from a mighty 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that produces a goosebump-inducing 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, allowing this Jeep to sprint from 0-60 in a scant 4.5 seconds.

If your favorite flavor of trail riding takes place across the flat desert at high speeds, this is your Wrangler. Not only will the Rubicon 392 take you across the desert at a breathtaking clip – it can also stop on a dime, thanks to heavy-duty brakes designed to keep drivers in control, especially in extreme driving conditions. The standard FOX shocks take the biggest bumps away for a more comfortable ride and steadier handling.

The Rubicon 392 features an electronic sway bar disconnect feature that boosts articulation for unmatched rock-crawling capability. Jeep estimates a ramp travel index of 730, which is the off-roading aficionado's way of saying that the Rubicon 392 can have one front wheel elevated significantly higher than the other without losing traction. This makes navigating over big boulders and rocky terrain easier and safer.

The Rubicon 392 wears a set of 33-inch mud-terrain tires and 17-inch wheels adorned with bronze accents. The dual exhaust is beefed up with four tailpipes, and Jeep added a toggle on the dash for drivers to switch between quiet and performance exhaust modes. If you like a little more growl out of your engine, simply switch to performance mode. Pulling into your driveway at midnight? Best to switch to quiet mode.

On the hood, you'll find an air intake vent designed for engine cooling and located far away from any potential water that could enter through the grille. One of the unique exterior features found on the Rubicon 392 is the available half doors. Jeep throws it back to previous model years with these low mount doors designed to protect occupants just enough while still maintaining an open-air experience.

Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon

Perhaps the Rubicon and Rubicon 392 still haven't satisfied your thirst for off-roading capability. Before you start googling aftermarket outfitters, take a look at the new Rubicon Xtreme Recon package. Available only on the Rubicon and Rubicon 392, the Xtreme Recon package takes beast mode a step further, with equipment designed for true trail domination.

With this factory option, you can outfit your Rubicon or Rubicon 392 with massive 35-inch all-terrain tires and 17-inch beadlock wheels. If you're tweaking your Rubicon, the package adds 1.5 inches of ground clearance, while the Rubicon 392's existing 2-inch lift is sufficient for the bigger tires.

Both trims receive a specially-tuned and trail-friendly 4.56:1 gear ratio, which means tons of available torque at low speeds. Wranglers equipped with a manual transmission will enjoy an even throatier 4.88:1 gear ratio. This translates into a crawl ratio of 100:1, which is just about perfect in capability terms.

Overall, just about every off-roading stat improves with the Xtreme Recon package, including approach and break-over angles. These Wranglers can ford up to 33.6 inches of water without breaking a sweat, thanks to the available 12.6 inches of ground clearance and careful placement of the air intakes. The Rubicon 392's capabilities easily exceed those of any other off-roading SUV on the market today.
