New vs Used vs CPO – Which Is Right for You?
As a Kentucky used car lot, we get a lot of questions about new, used, and CPO models, as you might imagine. There is a lot of confusion out there about what these terms mean, and it can be difficult to figure out which type of car is right for you. Fortunately, we can make things pretty simple and give you a good sense of which way to go.
A new car is just what it sounds like: a brand-new vehicle that has never had a previous owner or been driven on a lease. On the other hand, a used or pre-owned vehicle is a car that has had a previous owner or was part of a lease before it was sold or returned to a dealership. A Certified Pre-Owned or CPO vehicle, however, is not the same as a general used model, and the differences are quite significant.
For starters, in order for a vehicle to be offered as CPO, it has to meet a number of criteria and standards set by the manufacturer. The CPO vehicles we offer here at Dan Cummins of Georgetown, for example, cannot be more than five model years old and must have fewer than 75,000 miles on them. In addition to this, they have to pass a comprehensive 125-point vehicle inspection before they can be offered as CPO models. This includes a thorough inspection both inside and out, along with a full check of the car’s electrical and mechanical systems, including a road test to ensure it is in the best condition possible.
When you buy a CPO vehicle, you get extra peace of mind from the manufacturer because you know it has met their high standards. In addition to this, all of our CPO vehicles feature a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty along with a 3-month/3,000-mile maximum care warranty that covers more than 5,000 components on the vehicle. There are also other benefits with our CPO models, including a complimentary CARFAX vehicle history report, 24-hour roadside assistance, and much more.
Choosing the right model really comes down to your budget and what you need in your vehicle. A new car will be the most expensive, in general, but also give you the highest amount of peace of mind. Choosing a standard pre-owned vehicle will save you the most money, but there is always the unknown of what a previous owner did with the vehicle. Going with a CPO model is the perfect middle way: a lower price than a new vehicle but with extra peace of mind and warranty protection compared to a used car.
