80 Years of Jeep History

The Jeep brand has been around for quite some time and can trace its roots back to the founding of the Overland Automobile Company in 1903. However, the company really took off during World War II, with the introduction of the iconic Willys Jeep in 1941. This versatile military model was so practical that the company decided to bring it to the civilian market after the war was won.

The civilian history of Jeep began in 1945 with the unveiling of the CJ models. Produced until 1985, versions of this "flat fender" model were manufactured for the average person. While these adventurous vehicles were popular, it wasn't until 1963 and the introduction of the Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Gladiator that the company expanded beyond its wartime roots. One might even argue that these early Jeeps built the baseline for the current fleet.

During the 1980s, the Jeep lineup really began to expand. The Cherokee, Wrangler, and Comanche were dominating the streets and changing the way people went on adventures. The introduction of the Jeep Wrangler in 1987 was groundbreaking. As a completely customizable SUV, it gained rapid popularity. Folks loved that the doors, roof, and windshield could be removed, and the number of accessories that could be installed was vast. Another aspect that made the Wrangler such an instant success is that it came in a lot of different special editions every year. There are so many different Wranglers driving around today that we could write a book about them all.

In the 2000s, the current style of Jeep models began to take shape. That decade saw the introduction of the first four-door Wrangler Unlimited as well as the smaller Compass. The long-running Cherokee was also renamed the Liberty before switching back to its original title for the latest generation. Other models, including the Commander and the Patriot, came and went with only a few short years of production under their metaphorical belts. Lots of concepts and prototypes were played with as well, but the current lineup at Jeep consists of the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Gladiator, and, of course, the iconic Wrangler.

Joining the Future With the 4xe Hybrid

With eight decades of experience, the new direction that Jeep is heading in contains some promising hybrid models. The push to create more environmentally-friendly vehicles has been sweeping the auto industry. It's no longer enough just to get good gas mileage. More and more people want cars, trucks, and SUVs that run on clean energy as opposed to fossil fuels. This is where the new Wrangler 4xe comes into play.

As the company's first plug-in hybrid model, this beast is designed to handle the outdoors, just like its predecessors. It will still come with Dana 44 axles, a two-speed 4x4 transfer case, and plenty of ground clearance for climbing over rocks. It also still keeps its ability to ford water up to 30 inches deep. All of these factors are proof that hybrids don't have to be weak. They can be quite extraordinary when executed by an automaker that committed to superior off-road performance.

While the iconic Wrangler is again leading the way, soon, every Jeep model will be offered in a 4xe variant. The next model should be the upcoming Wagoneer full-size SUV, with the rest of the lineup following by 2025. These exciting hybrid models will deliver greater power and efficiency than ever before.

Although some people wondered how well Jeep could pull off the legendary performance and off-road capability of the Wrangler with a plug-in hybrid design, it is clear that they accomplished that and more. The 4xe's 2.0L Turbocharged engine delivers up to 375 hp and up to 470 lb-ft of torque for excellent overall performance. And thanks to instant torque, it can go from 0 to 60 in just 6 seconds, providing you with a driving experience that is exceptional.

Of course, as a hybrid model, we expected the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe to have excellent fuel economy, and it has more than met our expectations. It has an EPA estimated range of 370 miles with a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery, giving you the equivalent of an estimated 49 MPGe. Best of all, you have total control of the kind of performance you get from the vehicle. At the push of a button, you can set the Wrangler 4xe to “Hybrid” mode for excellent fuel efficiency, “Electric” mode to only use the electric battery, or “E-Save” mode to reserve your battery power for later. And if you want to completely avoid the gas station, it has a range of about 21 miles in Electric mode, perfect for running errands nearby.

As we said, with its 30-inches of water fording capability, the Wrangler 4xe is a true Trail Rated addition to the Jeep lineup. You can choose the 4x4 hardware you want: either a part-time Selec-Trac system or the full-time Rock-Trac 4WD system, depending on what you need from your vehicle. Either way, you get a fantastic 4x4 model with front and rear power systems that send power to each wheel with impressive torque and excellent off-road performance. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe starts at just $47,995, with plenty of options to choose from.

You'll find plenty of family-friendly SUVs on our lot, including the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee. All of these vehicles can carry up to five people, but the cargo sizes vary. The largest SUV in the Jeep lineup is the midsize Grand Cherokee, which is ideal for active families who like to tote around a lot of gear. If you have a small family or are single and are looking for a compact SUV for off-road adventures, then the subcompact Renegade is a fantastic option.

The 4x4 models are excellent for going off-road and include MacPherson struts to keep you comfortable on even the roughest terrain. If you are interested in a small SUV, then the 2021 Jeep Compass is the one to choose, with excellent performance both on and off the road. The Compass features a single engine, so it is easy to ensure you get the right one: a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir2 I-4 engine that delivers up to 180 hp and up to 175 lb-ft of torque. Depending on which model you choose, this comes paired with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 9-speed automatic, giving you the right level of performance for what you need.

For going off-road, you have several different options to consider for the 2021 Compass. The standard model comes with FWD, while you have two different 4x4 options available: Jeep Active Drive or Jeep Active Drive Low - the Low gives you better off-road capability. With the Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 system for the Jeep Compass, you get 8.5 inches of ground clearance, a 30.3-degree approach angle, 24.4-degree breakover angle, 33.6-degree departure angle, and up to 19-inches of water fording ability. For a small SUV, this is quite impressive and really demonstrates why Jeep is such a favorite among off-road enthusiasts.

There is an available 8.4-inch infotainment display inside the 2021 Jeep Compass, 7-inch digital driver display, and dual-zone automatic temperature control. You can get an auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient LED lighting, and leather-trimmed seats in the Compass too. With an available 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system and dual-pane panoramic power sunroof, the Compass really is an amazing choice for going off-road.

2021 Jeep Wrangler

Both two-door and four-door models of the Jeep Wrangler are available, providing you with seating for up to five passengers. Luxury options abound, including an available 7-inch full-color digital driver display, 8.4-inch infotainment display, and 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system. And with a Nappa leather-trimmed interior available, the Wrangler is better than it has ever been.

2021 Jeep Cherokee

If you want one of the best compact SUVs on the market, then the Jeep Cherokee is a great choice. So no matter what kind of performance you want, the Cherokee has you covered, and all three engines come paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Although many consider the Wrangler to be Jeep's king of going off-road, the Cherokee is certainly no slouch. When properly configured with the Jeep Active Drive Lock 4x4 system, it offers more than 8 inches of ground clearance and up to 20 inches of water fording ability. The Cherokee can also get an approach angle of up to about 28 degrees, a breakover angle of nearly 23 degrees, and a departure angle of more than 32 degrees.
