Choosing a used truck can be a great way to get all of the power and performance of a pickup, while also going easy on your budget and keeping an excellent vehicle on the road longer. Getting the best used truck possible, however, can be tricky, and you never know what you can expect from a private seller, which is why we suggest choosing a reputable dealership that you can count on. If you are looking for a full-size truck, but you do not need the power of a heavy-duty model, then consider a used Ram 1500 as a fantastic option that has a lot to offer.

The Ram 1500

Although for years it had been known as the Dodge Ram pickup, the Ram 1500 made a name for itself starting with the model year 2009 when it dropped the “Dodge” and started a new generation. The Ram 1500 is a full-size truck with numerous options for cab size available, along with a lot of different engines and even some different transmissions that have been offered during its run. This means you will find a lot of variations when looking for a used Ram 1500, which is great because it means that you can find one that is just right for you.

All of these options can feel a little bit overwhelming when looking for the right model, especially if you simply search online for a used Ram 1500 near you. That is why it is so valuable to have someone by your side that can help you narrow down all of your options and focus on what you truly need, so you get a truck that really works for you. Choosing a reputable dealership also means you have access to used Ram 1500 models in great condition, so you do not have to worry about any mystery problems or other issues.

One thing to keep in mind when shopping for a used Ram 1500 is that you will find a few different models from recent years. A Ram 1500 from 2009 to 2018 will have been part of the fourth generation of the Ram pickup, with fairly similar performance and features throughout that time period. There were some updates and changes made from year to year, but they will be largely similar overall. If you look at a more recent model from 2019 or later, however, then it will be from the fifth generation of the Ram pickup.

Does The Ram 1500 Have A Diesel Engine?

Ever since 2014, a diesel engine has been available on the Ram 1500, which means you can find a used Ram 1500 with a diesel engine if that is something you are interested in. You might see mention of a 6.7L Cummins Turbo-Diesel I6 engine when looking at information about the Ram pickup, because this engine has been offered on models since 2010. However, this engine is for the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 Heavy-Duty trucks, not the light-duty Ram 1500.

The Ram 1500 received a 3.0L Eco-Diesel V6 engine starting with model year 2014; so if you want a diesel engine in a used Ram 1500, then you want to look for a 2014 or later model. There are quite a few other engines that have been available on the Ram 1500, however, so make sure you look carefully at different used trucks you find. These included a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine, and a 4.7L V8.

One thing to note: there was an issue with the Eco-Diesel V6 engine on the Ram 1500, which caused it to be unavailable from about mid-2017 to early-2018. So it may be a bit harder to find models from that time period with the diesel engine. That being said, you still have a lot of options, and you can certainly find a used Ram 1500 with a diesel engine and other great features.

How Much Can The Ram 1500 Tow?

Depending on the model year you find, the Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 lbs. This varies quite a lot based on not only the model year, since this impacts which generation you are looking at, but also the engine in it. There are numerous engines available for this truck, so two used Ram 1500 models from the same year can have very different maximum towing capacities.

For example, let us take a look at two different models of a Ram 1500 truck from 2017, which is a common model year when looking at used options. A standard-cab model with a 6-foot bed, with the standard 3.6L V6 engine, if properly equipped, can have a maximum towing capacity of up to 7,260 lbs. But the same truck and engine, with a different axle ratio, might have a maximum trailer weight of just 4,970 lbs. Meanwhile, a 2017 Ram 1500 with a standard cab and 8-foot bed, with the available 5.7L HEMI V8 engine, when properly equipped, can have a maximum towing capacity of up to 10,640 lbs.

So, you can see that there are a lot of different variables at work when looking at the towing capacity for a used Ram 1500. If you find an even newer model, like a used 2019 Ram 1500 from the fifth generation, then it can have a maximum towing capacity of up to 12,750 lbs. You are going to want to find the trailer rating for any specific used Ram 1500 you are interested in and make sure it meets your needs. Be sure to ask your dealer for help with this if you have any questions.

How Much Payload Can the Ram 1500 Handle?

The payload capacity on a used Ram 1500 will also depend on the model you look at, but it can have a payload of up to 2,300 lbs. Just like the towing capacity, the model year, engine, and other options will all impact the maximum payload of a truck. That is why you want to have someone by your side that can help you find all of this information and make sure you have an accurate idea of what a used Ram 1500 can do.

Just like with towing, even two trucks from the same year can have very different maximum payloads. For example, a 2018 Ram 1500 with a quad cab and 6-foot bed, with the standard 3.6L V6 engine, can have a maximum payload of up to 1,880 lbs. Meanwhile, a 2018 model with a regular cab, 6-foot box, and 5.7L HEMI V8 engine might only have a maximum payload of 1,370 lbs. And a 2019 Ram 1500 from the fifth generation can have a maximum payload of well over 2,000 lbs. So it is important to look for this specific information and know the exact specs of any truck you are interested in.
