Picking Your Next Truck

Not all motor vehicles are created equal, and the same goes for pickup trucks. If you are in the market for used trucks, then you need to know some of the different features and uses of these amazingly versatile vehicles. The two key factors are size and configuration. In general, pickup trucks come in three different sizes: half-ton, three-quarter-ton, and one-ton. Half-ton pickup trucks are sometimes also called light-duty trucks. These are smaller in size with less payload capacity. On the plus size, they are easier to drive, more maneuverable, and generally provide better fuel economy.

The three-quarter-ton trucks are ideal for consumers who want to have the ability to carry a bit more cargo in the bed. They also are good for certain commercial purposes, like carrying pipes or cement for plumbers or contractors.

One-ton trucks tend to represent the perfect meeting of form and function. In general, these are the most versatile trucks on the market and are perfect for most tough jobs. They can tow most trailers, carry plenty of cargo, and often offer different engines depending on price. If you have a really tough job, then you might consider a heavy-duty truck. They have larger engines and can tow the heaviest trailers. These are the ones to choose if you intend to use your truck for work as a carpenter or landscaper, or an outdoor enthusiast and need your pickup to tow a mobile home or boat. Many manufacturers offer their heavy-duty trucks with diesel engines to provide greater torque for towing purposes.

Another important factor in choosing a truck is cabin configuration. There are three major cabin types. Most automakers call a two-door cabin with one row of seats either a regular cab or a standard cab. These are perfect if you are using your truck for mostly commercial purposes. The front row will either have two bucket seats or a bench seat that can fit up to three passengers.

The next option is a cab with two rows of seats, two full doors and two half-doors. These are also good for commercial uses where you may have to take more than three workers to complete a project. This cab's second row can be a little tight but allows you to still fit up to three passengers in the back. This is also where things get a little confusing. Ford calls this type a Super Cab, Ram refers to it as a Quad Cab, and GMC and Chevy call it either a Double Cab or an Extended Cab on older models. The roomiest of three cab types is one that has four-full-doors and two rows of seats. Front row and rear-seat passengers will typically have close to the same amount of room. In addition, this type of cabin can fit up to six passengers, depending on how the front row is set up. The name for this cab type will also depend on the manufacturer.
