The History of the Jeep Gladiator

The history of the Jeep pickup truck is as old as the brand itself. In 1947, Jeep created the Willys-Overland truck as a medium-duty vehicle perfect for lending farmers a hand with chores that took them over various terrains. From checking on livestock in the fields to doing some heavy equipment lifting in mud and rain, this model was a first for Jeep as the manufacturer attempted to move beyond the traditional war-time vehicle that founded the brand. The Willys-Overland was offered with a choice of a bare chassis, chassis cab, or pickup bed. Perhaps more importantly to the farm market was the offer of four-wheel drive, which was unavailable from manufacturers such as Chevy and Ford until the late 1950s.

In 1963, Jeep introduced a new pickup truck that quickly gained the attention and captured the imagination of the American public. Known as the J-Series, the Jeep Gladiator was marketed as the perfect vehicle to take you “where the fun is.” With a promise of “twice the traction,” the Gladiator included standard four-wheel drive that could be activated with the simple flick of a lever. This made it a heavy draw for adventurous families and those who needed to get heavy work accomplished in all sorts of inclement weather. In fact, the Jeep Gladiator was the only pickup truck in the United States to offer standard four-wheel drive until 1971.

Special options and editions of the Jeep Gladiator were offered over the years to help their drivers do a variety of jobs. From a front-mounted winch for recovery to a dump-style body or snow plow upfit, the Gladiator seemed to be able to do it all with style. A Camper Special version increased the payload capacity to 3,930 pounds and upgraded the suspension, cooling, and transmission so that a camper unit could be safely installed in the bed area.

The Gladiator seemed to be a sure thing, remaining in production even as other Jeep trucks, like the J-10, were introduced. When the Gladiator left the market in 1987, the J-10 and the Comanche, which came on the market in 1986, had big tire prints to fill, and neither experienced quite the same commercial success as the Gladiator.

2020 and 2021 Jeep Gladiator

Rumors of the return of the Gladiator swirled for years. After 32 years in hiding, the Jeep's off-road pickup truck reappeared in 2020. Fresh from the showroom floor, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator's four available trims - the Sport, Sport S, Overland, and Rubicon - impressed the nation. With the capacity to seat five passengers, tow up to 7,650 pounds, and stow up to 1,600 pounds in its 5' bed, the Gladiator was back and better than ever. This new Gladiator combined all of the favorite features of the old models, like the soft top and skid plates, while adding new technology, like Bluetooth connectivity and automatic headlights, to its benefit.

For the 2020 Gladiator, drivers had a choice of two transmissions but only had one engine. Drivers can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission to pair with a 3.6L V6 engine, which provides a rough-and-ready 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The Gladiator returned in 2021 with even more features. While the 3.6L V6 engine remained the same, a diesel engine was added, and the various trims were updated/upgraded. The 2021 Gladiator Sport starts out the line with the traditional soft top, wash-out interior with drain plugs, and standard armor for the fuel tank and transfer case. The next level is the Overland, which adds comfort features like power locks and windows, smartphone compatibility, and heated side mirrors.

The Mojave and Rubicon trims top the line with a wider stance and an even more robust set of off-road offerings. The Mojave benefits from Fox suspension, high clearance fender flares, and all-terrain tires, while the Rubicon shines with an electronic locking front differential, Rock-Trac 4x4 crawl system, and an anti-roll bar that can be electronically disconnected for the ultimate in axle articulation.
