If you’ve looked at the specs of new RAM pickups in the last few years, you may have come across a term called eTorque and wondered what it means. Although the name gives some indication, we need to look at the system in detail to understand the power and technology involved. Then, we can explain why it has appeared on the RAM truck since the 2019 edition.

What Is eTorque on the RAM 1500?

An eTorque engine contains an electric motor that handles torque delivery, enhancing vehicle performance. This electric motor takes the place of the typical alternator found on a standard engine, giving RAM trucks (and some Jeeps) a partial hybrid system. Basically, instead of a more common hybrid design that assists in overall power generation, an eTorque engine uses a paired electric motor specifically to generate torque.

This kind of focused utilization of electric power is part of the reason why RAM offers the best capability, efficiency, and stability in a full-size pickup. Torque is essential for most trucks, as it gives a longer, heavier vehicle more agility in stop-and-go traffic. Torque is also needed for heavy tasks like pulling cars out of the mud.

With an eTorque vehicle, the electric motor is not meant to help the engine travel further on less fuel. Instead, it is a conventional engine with a motor directing electric power to the torque, not a traditional hybrid or fully-electric system. The electric motor generates electric power through regenerative braking and then applies it to one element of motion: torque delivery.

Where Is the eTorque Electric Motor on a RAM 1500?

The eTorque motor’s position varies depending on which engine you’re looking at. For example, if you have a RAM 1500 pickup with the regular 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces up to 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, the eTorque motor is situated on the front engine and employs liquid cooling. On the other hand, for the optional 5.7-liter V-8 engine that produces up to 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, the eTorque motor sits atop the engine and employs air cooling.

How Much Torque Does eTorque Add to the RAM?

One of the primary purposes of the eTorque motor on a RAM truck’s engine is to provide more torque at low speeds, specifically when the engine is running at less than 2,000 rpm. This will be the primary benefit for most drivers who need a commuting vehicle.

The amount of torque added depends on the engine. For example, the 3.6-liter V-6 engine receives an extra 90 pound-feet of torque from the electric motor and has a total rating of 410 pound-feet. Meanwhile, the 5.7-liter V-8 engine gets 130 pound-feet of additional torque at proper speeds and has a total torque of 650 pound-feet.

There are no real downsides to the eTorque design concept. It is simply a logical step beyond traditional automotive hybrid power systems: take the electric power and direct it wherever the vehicle could most benefit. As a result, there is no loss of performance or power and no compromises over a basic gasoline setup.

How Does the eTorque Motor Work?

An eTorque vehicle employs a regenerative braking system. When you press the brakes in a standard vehicle, energy is wasted through heat into the surroundings around your vehicle. Instead of letting that energy go to waste, the eTorque motor can power electrical systems. This process is called regenerative braking.

When coasting or applying a light brake, like coming to a gradual stop, the RAM truck’s eTorque motor switches to pure regeneration mode, which disables the truck’s traditional disc brakes and applies the regenerative ones. The vehicle is still slowed at the intended rate, but the friction generated is recaptured into energy for the torque output. On hard brakes, such as an urgent stop, the traditional disc brakes are employed, and there is also a middle stage between pure regeneration and pure disc brake stopping. This three-stage system is called blended regeneration.

Blended regenerative braking helps take the stress off the regular brakes, allowing them to last longer. Charging an electric battery or motor simultaneously is usually part of their purpose as well. They are beneficial innovations found in some recent vehicles, and though regenerative braking can feel slightly different than a standard brake pedal, drivers typically find it comfortable after one test drive.

Which RAM Models Come With eTorque?

Among RAM vehicles, the eTorque is available on the RAM 1500 pickup truck only. While the RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 provide more powerful choices under the hood, eTorque engines are unavailable due to their heavy-duty build. However, such models will likely appear in the future.

The RAM 1500 is an incredible truck with enormous power ratings and some of the most stunning luxury and technology features available on the market. From 2019 up to 2022 and onward, the RAM 1500 gets eTorque power generation added to its generous standard equipment package.

Want a Strong Truck? Get the Ram 1500 with eTorque

Different trucks serve different needs, but the RAN 1500 undoubtedly brings enough power. The 2022 edition has towing capacities of 6,120 pounds on the V-6 and 8,280 pounds on the V-8. Payload capacity can get very high, starting at 1,225 pounds on the V-6 and reaching 2,325 pounds on the V-8. Throw in a zero-to-60-mph time of only 6.6 seconds, and the RAM 1500 defies the stereotype of a heavy, slow truck.

     4×4 Crew Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 10,520 pounds 1,560 pounds

Ram 2500 Limited Longhorn

The Ram 2500 Limited Longhorn offers two different bed sizes in the 4×2 Crew Cab setup. In the 4×4 drivetrain, you get two Crew Cab bed sizes and one Mega Cab option.

     Drivetrain/Cab/Bed Towing Capacity Payload Capacity
4×2 Crew Cab with 8-foot bed 14,190 pounds 3,170 pounds
     4×2 Crew Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 14,370 pounds 3,350 pounds
4×4 Crew Cab with 8-foot bed 13,860 pounds 2,730 pounds
     4×4 Crew Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 14,080 pounds 3,050 pounds
     4×4 Mega Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 13,830 pounds 2,800 pounds

Ram 2500 Limited

The Ram 2500 Limited trim comes in a 4×2 Crew Cab with two bed sizes and a 4×4 Crew Cab with different box sizes. In addition, you have the Mega Cab option on the 4×4 drivetrain.

     Drivetrain/Cab/Bed Towing Capacity Payload Capacity
4×2 Crew Cab with 8-foot bed 14,120 pounds 3,100 pounds
     4×2 Crew Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 14,130 pounds 3,110 pounds
4×4 Crew Cab with 8-foot bed 13,810 pounds 2,780 pounds
     4×4 Crew Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 13,850 pounds 2,820 pounds
     4×4 Mega Cab with 6-foot, 4-inch bed 13,610 pounds 2,590 pounds

As these charts clearly show, your 4×2 Crew Cab options with shorter beds deliver higher towing and payload capacities. Many people mistakenly believe a 4×4 powertrain with a larger cab and bed would naturally tow and haul more.

Unfortunately, your truck has a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) which determines how much weight you can have in total between the truck and trailer. So, when you increase your cab and bed size and add 4×4 components to the drivetrain, these items also add more weight to the truck. This added weight leaves less available capacity for towing and hauling, thus lowering your vehicle’s ratings.

Additional Ways To Increase Towing Capacity

Every Ram 2500 comes standard with a 64-liter HEMI V-8 engine with an impressive 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. In addition, the factory-installed rear-axle crossmember enables you to install an available Fifth-Wheel or Gooseneck Prep Package. With these prep packages, your tow rating soars to 17,540 pounds.

You can also opt for the 6.4-liter Cummins turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder engine that puts out 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with the prep package, allows you to tow up to 20,000 pounds.

Intelligent Towing Systems

Available towing features on your Ram 2500 include the Trailer 360-Degree Surround View Camera, a Trailer Hitch Light, and a Trailer Reverse Steering Control system. The camera system provides a view around your trailer to help you navigate tight quarters. Using the Trailer Hitch Light allows you to see your hitch clearly, day or night. Backing up your trailer has never been easier with the Trailer Reverse Steering Control system. You turn the control dial in the direction you want your trailer to go, and the system handles the steering.

Other helpful systems include the Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System which remembers four trailers with 12 tires per trailer. In addition, a Trailer Sway Control system detects when your trailer starts to sway and adjusts braking and engine torque to bring your truck and trailer back in sync.

Here at Dan Cummins Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Georgetown, we want our customers to find the truck that fits their lifestyle. Two of the most popular truck models in 2022 are the Ford Raptor and the Ram 1500 Rebel. Here are some similarities and differences between these two models that can help you choose the right one for you.

View RAM Rebel

Engine/Power

The 2022 Ford Raptor offers a solid, traditional truck ride, with a V6 gas engine and a standard four-wheel drive. The Raptor gets 15 miles per gallon in the city and 18 on the highway. With a 26-gallon gas tank, that gives you a range of 390 miles in the city and 468 miles on the highway. With 450 horsepower and a 47.3-ft turning diameter, the Ford Raptor’s maximum payload is 1,410 pounds.

Ram’s answer to the 2022 Raptor, the 2022 Ram Rebel, is a truck with a V6 hybrid engine, giving the Ram Rebel more efficiency when it comes to mileage. The Rebel gets 19 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway. Its 26-gallon gas tank gives drivers a range of 437 miles in the city and 552 on the highway. Although the Rebel’s horsepower is lower, at 395, its max payload is 1,590 pounds, almost 200 pounds more than the Raptor. With a 45.8-ft turning diameter, the Rebel offers more precise handling than its Ford competitor.

Driving Experience

The Ford Raptor has electric power steering and cruise control, ensuring a smooth drive in town and on the highway. An adjustable, heated leather steering wheel and keyless ignition create a seamless starting and stopping experience. Rearview cameras and parking alerts help you navigate the city and park safely, while front and rear cupholders and seat-back storage allow you to store some supplies, although the storage room in the standard Raptor is less than in more deluxe F-150 models.

The 2022 Ram Rebel provides a smooth ride with additional storage at a lower cost point. The Rebel’s power steering and cruise control, along with its telescopic steering column, make this truck a comfortable vehicle for short journeys and long road trips. Keyless ignition and rearview cameras make it easier than ever to set off on an adventure. The Ram Rebel has a significant advantage over the Raptor when it comes to storage with its cup holders and overhead console space, allowing you to carry more supplies in a compact area.

Exterior

The standard Raptor is available in six colors: Oxford White, Iconic Silver Metallic, Code Orange Metallic, Atlas Blue Metallic, Antimatter Blue Metallic, and Agate Black Metallic. Drivers can also get the truck in an optional Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. The Raptor features 17-inch alloy wheel rims and a standard hitch, though customers can add a range of optional packages, including 37-inch tires and upgraded headlights. Each Raptor comes with colored accent bumpers and a uniquely styled grill, with “Ford” in block letters.

The 2022 Ram Rebel comes in six total colors, including three monochrome and three two-tone shades. The monochrome colors are Diamond Black, Crystal Pearl, and Billet Silver, and the two-tone colors are Hydro Blue Pearl, Flame Red, and Bright White. Each Ram Rebel comes with a Sport Performance Hood and a standard trailers hitch. Customers can add packages and features like an optional multifunction tailgate and the signature RamBox Cargo Management System. The Ram’s standard aluminum wheels are larger than the Raptor’s at 18 inches.

Interior

The 2022 Ford Raptor comes with a standard interior aluminum trim, though customers can upgrade to a carbon fiber interior trim if they want more luxury in their truck. The truck seats five, with adjustable seats and a 12-inch connectivity touch screen. Customers can upgrade their speaker systems to improve sound quality. While the standard interior has basic features, performance packages can increase the cabin size and improve overall comfort.

The 2022 Ram Rebel comes in two interior trims, a solid black and a two-toned red and black color scheme. The truck’s standard entertainment system is an 8.4-inch customizable touch screen, but customers can upgrade to a 12-inch screen if they want a larger interface. All Ram Rebels come with a Driver Information Digital Cluster Display, which shows mileage, gas levels, and other key performance metrics in one place. The truck also seats five, with a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat and Ram’s new signature air filtration system.

Safety Features

Both trucks come with comprehensive safety features. The 2022 Ford Raptor features traction control and anti-lock brakes for fast stopping on roads and off-road surfaces. It also has a blind spot and lane change alert system to help you navigate city roads and highways easily. Drivers and passengers can feel safe with the truck’s front and rear head airbags and airbag deactivation system. Additional performance packages can add to the truck’s safety features and improve the overall ride.

The 2022 Ram Rebel provides solid safety features at a lower price point than the Ford Raptor. The truck’s standard safety system includes traction control and an anti-lock braking system with brake drying, ensuring a safe and smooth ride under all weather conditions. Dual front side-mounted airbags and front and rear head airbags provide security for drivers and passengers. Customers who want to upgrade their truck’s safety systems with optional features, like a Parallel and Perpendicular Parking Assist system and a 360-Degree Trailer Surround View Camera, can add safety and performance packages to their truck.

Overall, these two trucks provide a similar driving experience, but the Ram Rebel’s extra storage, better gas mileage, and lower price make it a fantastic value for truck-lovers looking for a new ride. A white 2020 Jeep Renegade is shown at night with its smart headlights illuminated after leaving a used car dealership in Lexington.

Everyone knows that driving can be perilous, and despite our best efforts, accidents happen. Even the most cautious of drivers can find themselves bending fenders on a bad day. Crashes happen in an instant, and it’s scary to think that even brief lapses in concentration can result in car accidents. The risk is even greater in a city like Lexington, KY, where the population is bigger, and the roads are more congested than in smaller towns. Fortunately, car technology has come a long way, and vehicle manufacturers are constantly working to make their vehicles safer for everyone with ever-improving safety features. If you’re looking for a used car dealership in Lexington, keep an eye out for vehicles that sport these 10 safety features.

View All Used Vehicles

#1 – Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Alert

Forward collision alert and emergency braking go together like peanut butter and jelly. Vehicle manufacturers know it, too, hence why the pair is often bundled into one. A vehicle equipped with this feature uses front-facing cameras to detect objects – including other vehicles – in its path. It will alert the driver of imminent frontal collisions and, when needed, automatically trigger emergency braking to reduce or avoid collisions altogether. We’re all prone to taking our eyes off the road momentarily or even having a foot slip off the brake. Forward collision alert and emergency braking have your back when you need it the most.

#2 – Pedestrian Detection Systems

Pedestrian detection systems work similarly to forward collision alert systems but are specifically designed to detect – you guessed it – pedestrians. The tech in cars is getting smarter and smarter, and cars with this particular safety feature can differentiate human movements from harmless objects, for example, a paper bag floating across the roadway. In the United States alone, tens of thousands of pedestrians are injured in motor vehicle accidents each year. In 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that over 6,000 pedestrians were killed in accidents. Each and every one of us is a pedestrian at one point or another, and this feature helps us look out for each other.

#3 – Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control is one of those features that gets us one step closer to self-driving cars, even if we’re not quite fully there yet. For now, adaptive cruise control is a great tool that can make highway driving safer and easier. Instead of keeping your vehicle at a constant speed the way regular cruise control does, adaptive cruise control uses radar to track the vehicle in front of yours, speeding up and slowing down as needed to keep you going with the flow of traffic. Drivers can still set a maximum speed and control how much distance is maintained between their vehicle and others.

A white 2020 Ram 3500 is shown with simulated blind spot monitoring sensor line next to a red Ram 1500 TRX.

#4 – Blind Spot Monitoring

The infamous blind spot has been duping drivers for years, not to mention giving them neck cramps. Vehicle manufacturers have combated the pesky blind spot with blind spot monitoring. Radars located on the rear bumper scan for vehicles approaching in adjacent lanes and chime a warning at the driver to improve awareness of other vehicles in relation to yours. A little icon on the side mirror will also light up, so the driver has multiple cues to alert them of a vehicle in their no-longer-blind spot.

#5 – Lane Assist

Lane assist technology essentially comes in two different versions. The basic systems alert the driver to unintentional lane drifting, so they can maneuver the vehicle back on the right track. More advanced systems go a step further by automatically steering the vehicle back towards the center of the lane. The vehicle steering itself definitely takes some getting used to, but you’ll appreciate the help once you’re accustomed to it.

#6 – Smart Headlights

Everyone’s experienced that moment when they’re driving past another car, waiting and waiting for the high beams to flip off. Before you know it, you can’t see, you’re angry, and you may or may not be aggressively flashing your own brights, just to send a message. It’s not exactly the safest of driving conditions. Smart headlights combat this very scenario. The best systems don’t merely automatically switch the high beams on and off; they even work in tandem with steering to adjust the direction they project light, giving the driver optimal lighting through sharp corners.

#7 – Parallel Parking Assist

Parallel parking assist may not be a safety feature in the traditional sense, but it can prevent a lot of stress and anxiety, neither of which pair well with operating a vehicle. It works by measuring a potential parking space to ensure it’s large enough – if it’s not, parallel parking assist won’t engage. The system may then give you some instructions (i.e. put the vehicle in reverse, take your hands off the steering wheel) before steering into the space. Best part? Parallel Parking Assist doesn’t get nervous if people start watching it.

#8 – 360-Degree Camera Views

Backup cameras can seem overrated if you’ve never used them. Heck, the mirrors are there for a reason, right? Yes, but once you’ve driven a car with a backup camera, trust me when I say you’ll never want to go back. You can, however, go forward with a 360-degree view. Using cameras placed on all sides of the vehicle, surround view will show the driver an aerial view of the car, so they can see all the cars, curbs, goats, and anything else in their immediate surroundings. It automatically kicks on when the vehicle is put in reverse and can manually be turned on when driving straight ahead as well.

#9 – Electronic Stability Control

This system is pretty common these days, but it is still an important one. Vehicles with electronic stability control systems will automatically take action if a loss of traction or steering is detected. The brakes will automatically apply to individual wheels to steer the vehicle in one direction or the other until the driver can regain control. This feature has been fundamental in reducing the number of car accidents and is essentially standard on 2012 models and newer.

A burgundy 2020 Jeep Cherokee is shown using its automatic windshield wipers on a rainy street.

#10 – Automatic Windshield Wipers

Sometimes little things can make a big difference. Turning windshield wipers on and off and calibrating their speed probably isn’t much more than an annoyance to most drivers, but it’s still a distraction (especially when you just can’t get the wiper speed right). With automatic windshield wipers, vehicles can detect when it’s raining, plus the amount of rain, to make sure the wipers are, well, wiping at the optimal speed. It’s one less thing to worry about, so you can keep concentrating on the road ahead.

A Collaborative Effort

Safety features like the ones listed above are great tools to make you and your passengers safer on the road. It’s important to keep in mind that, even in a vehicle that sports all of the aforementioned features, driver vigilance is one of the best defenses against car accidents. We’re all human, though, and mistakes are made all the time. When those mistakes inevitably happen, you’ll be glad to have your back covered by a vehicle that’s designed with your safety in mind.

Open Air Wonder

Imagine being able to revel in the sense of open air freedom like never before. In the Gladiator, that’s exactly what you can expect with its removable doors and fold-down windshield, as well as its removable roof, which makes it one of the only pickup trucks in the industry to offer this feature. Become one with the nature that surrounds you by opting to remove these elements to create the ultimate iconic adventure mate, and if you thought it might be difficult to do this, think again.

Follow the steps below in order to take the doors off the Gladiator:

  1. Locate the Jeep-issued toolkit that can be found in the center storage bin of your Gladiator.
  2. Open the doors and roll your windows down to begin.
  3. Utilizing the Jeep-issued short T-50 bit and ratchet, remove the Gladiator’s locknuts under each door hinge. Store in the convenient holder, located behind the driver’s seat under the rear passenger seat.
  4. Locate the black strap on each open door, which conceals electrical wiring. Unlock the wiring by pushing the red tab up, then press and lift up on the white lever to release the wiring.
  5. Utilizing the long T-40 bit, locate the retaining rod, which resides above the lower door hinge, remove the bolt, then swing the door open. Replace the bolt once the door is out of the way.
  6. Lift up on the door. You’ll feel a pop, and the door will be removed from the vehicle.
  7. Repeat with the other door(s).

You’re in for a wild ride with the wind whipping through your hair and the feeling of adrenaline coursing through your veins. Few pickups can offer this type of excitement during your travels. When you want to remove the barriers between you and the open feel of nature, the Gladiator showcases this feeling seamlessly. What’s even better is that you’re able to customize your experience by opting to remove all of these elements or just one to heighten any type of ride. Store your roof panels in Jeep-issued storage bags, and your door panels fit perfectly in the bed. Jeep thought of everything when designing this thrilling ride, and if exploration is in your future, nothing can amplify this quite like the Gladiator.

A blue 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon is shown off-roading in the desert.

Finding the perfect Jeep Wrangler dealership is about more than just inventory – it’s about the dealer’s Wrangler knowledge. While most vehicles are used for hauling the family or daily commutes, the Jeep Wrangler is much more than that. It’s an off-roading machine that’s capable of tackling terrain that most vehicles wouldn’t dare challenge. Even many trucks can’t go where a Wrangler can. The Jeep Wrangler’s low weight and all-terrain capability make it a mud crawling master.

But even though all Wranglers are off-road capable, some are more proficient than others. You need a dealership that knows this. When you’re ready to purchase a true trail boss, find yourself a dealership like Dan Cummins that offers several Wrangler options, including the new Xtreme Recon package. If you thought the Rubicon performed stellar off the pavement, just wait until you hear the info we have about this new reveal.

The Wrangler Rubicon Story: From Aftermarket Mods To Stock Stats

Let’s start off with some facts about the Rubicon’s history. The Wrangler has a long history of being useful off-road, as it was originally designed to handle military duties. But while it’s always been a great model for zipping around on dusty roads, it wasn’t necessarily what we’d now consider an “off-roading beast.” It wasn’t until 1999 when a group of Chrysler engineers decided to use some aftermarket modifications to prove just how powerful that Wrangler could be in serious off-roading situations.

After years of sneaking on an occasional upgrade or two, these engineers were finally able to prove their point, which is that the Wrangler can be even better on the trails when modified appropriately. This is how the Wrangler Rubicon was born. Rather than presenting it as its own trim, the engineers pushed it in package form.

Once the Wrangler passed the tests and the company saw just how right that these engineers were, the Rubicon couldn’t be stopped. In fact, in 2003, Jeep expected to sell at around 4,000 Rubicons in the first year of production yet ended up selling over 10,000 instead. The demand for a hardcore off-roader was finally heard, planned, and executed thanks to some clever and sneaky Jeep enthusiasts.

Much like how the Rubicon’s birth made aftermarket Wrangler modifications into a real OEM package, the new Xtreme Recon package brings forth what customers have been doing to their Wrangler’s behind the scenes for years. No more having to pay for aftermarket modifications and installations to get your Rubicon where you need it to be – the Xtreme Recon gives you everything straight from the dealership. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly this new off-road package offers.

The black interior of a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon shows the infotainment screen.

What Is the Xtreme Recon Package?

The Jeep Wrangler Xtreme Recon Package is a Rubicon-exclusive add-on coming to the 2022 Wrangler. This package is designed specifically for hardcore off-roading enthusiasts, and it is designed to compete with the new Ford Bronco’s off-road Sasquatch Package.

The first main new spec that the Xtreme Recon Package offers is 35-inch wheels on 17-inch beadlock capable wheels (the same as the Sasquatch). In addition to this, the package adds on a 1.5-inch factory lift, bringing the Xtreme Recon’s ground clearance to 12.9 inches compared to the classic Rubicon’s 10.8 inches. This means that drivers gain over 2 inches of height when they add on this package.

The new Xtreme Recon Package also offers a 4.56:1 gear ratio, which is higher than even the standard Rubicon’s 4.11:1 ratio. Your axle ratio is important for off-roading because the higher it is, the more power the model has for slow-paced situations such as trailing and rock climbing. When you choose a vehicle specifically for off-roading, your choice isn’t about top speeds or fuel economy, it’s about that crawling power, and this higher axle ratio helps drivers achieve just that.

How Does It Match Up Against The Bronco?

The key question to consider here is, how does the new Xtreme Recon Package match up against the new Bronco’s stats? Well, first off, let’s just say that sometimes starting out with the upper hand doesn’t turn out so well in the long run. Because Jeep has seen what the Bronco is capable of, they’ve been able to go above and beyond to top it on the upcoming model year. Not only are they finally giving Wrangler drivers what they’ve been asking for, but they’re also trying to outdo the competition, and they’re succeeding.

Let’s compare some stats.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon:

  • Approach Angle: 47.4 degrees
  • Breakover Angle: 26.7 degrees
  • Departure Angle: 40.7 degrees
  • Water Fording: 33.6 inches

The Ford Bronco Sasquatch:

  • Approach Angle: 43.2 degrees
  • Breakover Angle: 26.3 degrees
  • Departure Angle: 37.0 degrees
  • Water Fording: 33.5 inches

As you can see, the Rubicon Recon Package outdoes the Bronco by a landslide on many key aspects of off-road performance. But what exactly do each of these stats mean? We’ve got it broken down for you.

The approach angle is how steep an obstacle the vehicle can drive up without bottoming out or scraping the front bumper. Conversely, the departure angle determines how far a vehicle can descend without its rear area bottoming out. The breakover angle determines what a vehicle can drive over without scraping the underside or hitting the skid plate.

Your water fording capability rating determines how much water you can drive through without having any issues. Although the Recon Package and Bronco’s water fording scores are similar, the Recon’s otherwise higher stats give it a decided advantage. While both models are very capable of hitting the trails, Wrangler’s new package option is better suited for hardcore off-roading enthusiasts than anything the Ford Bronco currently offers.

Additional Perks to Buying a New Jeep Wrangler

While these off-roading specs are impressive on their own, Jeep Wrangler ownership comes with far more perks than just capability. First off, you get to be part of the Jeep Wave Program. This means that no matter what your mileage is, you’ll get your first three oil changes for free. You’ll also get free, no-charge last-minute vehicle rentals and access to 24/7 roadside assistance. When you need an emergency tire change, you run out of gas, or you require a jumpstart, your complimentary Jeep Wave roadside assistance is here to help.

Another Wrangler ownership perk to keep in mind is that these models hold their value. This is because the Wrangler has a record of having a long lifespan. While most vehicles need to be traded in between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, Wranglers have a knack for lasting up to 400,000 miles and then some. Whether you want to keep your new Wrangler for years to come, or you plan on trading it in, these are important aspects to consider when buying a new model.

If you’re torn between choosing the Bronco and the Wrangler, this is an important factor to consider. While the Bronco name is old, it hasn’t been in production for decades, and we don’t know how well these new models will hold up long-term. The Wrangler, on the other hand, offers a long track record of continuous reliability.

If you are as excited as we are to see the new Xtreme Recon Package in action, sign up for info on the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Rubicon 392 to learn more about this exciting new off-roading package and reserve yours today.

A white 2020 used Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is shown driving past a guard rail.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most awarded SUV in history and, when you start looking at models like the SRT and Trackhawk, it’s easy to see why. Jeep answered the growing demand for a more powerful and capable Grand Cherokee with the debut of the SRT, which stands for “Street and Racing Technology,” in the new millennium and followed up with the even more powerful Trackhawk a few years later. With the models still fairly new and loaded with Jeep’s legendary capability, you can easily find a used Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT or Trackhawk at an affordable price on the used lot. So, how do you know which one to buy?

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Can you imagine a Jeep that’s not only rugged and adventure-ready but incredibly powerful and capable of satisfying any need for speed? Jeep brought this vision to life in the new millennium with the introduction of the Grand Cherokee SRT to the lineup. Known as the SRT8 when first introduced in 2012, this performance model was rebranded as simply the SRT in 2014. This is a great place to start in your search for a used Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The most powerful and technologically advanced Jeep ever made at the time, the SRT shocked the industry with its jaw-dropping launch from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. It’s hard to imagine a Jeep accelerating this quickly and responding so well both on and off the road, but the SRT does both without breaking a sweat. This power and capability (along with the SRT8’s name) come from the Grand Cherokee’s performance-focused 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque for maximum acceleration.

As the best handling Jeep ever made, the SRT continues the legendary capability of the Jeep brand and introduces new features like the Selec-Track system. The system features five drive modes that you can manually select based on the driving condition or terrain. Depending on the mode (Auto, Sport, Tow, Track, and Snow), the SRT finetunes the suspension, throttle response, shift patterns, and other components to optimize the SUV’s performance and ready it for the road ahead.

These features continue to see improvements with subsequent SRT models and make the SRT a great value because you’re getting the best of both worlds – an SUV that can seamlessly transition from the highway or the track to the trail. When you add in the SRT’s long list of features, such as Brembo brakes, an electronic limited-slip differential, and Jeep’s signature four-wheel-drive systems, then there’s no question that it is your best bet if you’re looking for raw capability in an SUV.

A white 2020 used Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is shown parked in a driveway.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Just when you thought the Jeep lineup couldn’t get any more powerful, Jeep proved otherwise with the debut of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk in 2018. Replacing the SRT as the most powerful SUV ever made, the Trackhawk had some big shoes to fill and, unsurprisingly, managed to exceed every expectation of performance and capability. It is a Jeep, after all.

The Trackhawk is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 Hellcat engine that’s paired with a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission to deliver 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. It’s the fastest SUV in history, with a launch from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph. But speed isn’t the only remarkable feature about the Trackhawk. Like the SRT, the Trackhawk isn’t meant solely for the pavement.

Aggressive, rugged, and capable, the Trackhawk is everything you want and need in an SUV if you’re heading down the trail. Its five-mode Selec-Track system gives you the same customization found on the SRT, while its four-wheel-drive system continues to offer legendary capability whether you’re blazing a new trail, fording a water crossing, or climbing boulders. On top of this, the Trackhawk offers even more in terms of intuitive technology and conveniences through an array of digital displays, smartphone integration, and navigational tools that put everything you need right within reach. You can even add a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment center to keep your backseat passengers entertained whether you’re on the highway, navigating a busy city street, or getting a little mud on the tires.

Decisions, Decisions

How do you decide between two powerhouses like the SRT and the Trackhawk? It all comes down to your priorities and what you want and need from an SUV. Is price your top priority, or are you willing to spend more for newer technology and more luxury features? Here’s a quick breakdown of what to consider as you shop for a used Grand Cherokee SRT or Trackhawk.

Price: The SRT has a lower price and a longer run in the Jeep lineup, which means you can find older models at a much lower price than the relatively new Trackhawk.

Performance: There’s no question that the Trackhawk is faster and more capable than the SRT, thanks to its 707-horsepower supercharged engine and a launch from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds that will leave you breathless.

Technology: Since both these models share the Jeep Grand Cherokee platform, you can expect to find comparable connectivity and safety features. Depending on the year model, you’ll enjoy features like blind spot monitoring, forward collision alert, hill descent control, and electronic roll mitigation.

Luxury: The Trackhawk offers top-quality leather seating and accents, but you’ll find the SRT delivers plenty of luxury of its own with massaging seats, a leather interior, and faux-suede accents throughout the cabin.

Off-Road Capability: With both models coming off the Jeep lineup, you can expect to find Jeep’s legendary four-wheel-drive systems and off-road components that ready both the SRT and the Trackhawk for the trail. However, if backwoods adventure is your goal, the less powerful Trailhawk trim with its special off-roading features may be your best bet.

A red 2020 used Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is shown on the race track.

Adventure Awaits

Now that you know more about the Grand Cherokee SRT and the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, which one will you choose? These models are the two top-tier trims in the Jeep lineup and boast relatively high sticker prices when purchased new, which makes them an even better value and a great find on the used lot. Of course, there are a few other things to consider once you find the SRT or the Trackhawk of your dreams.

Jeeps are designed for rugged adventures, and many owners opt to add aftermarket accessories or make modifications to their rigs, the SRT and Trackhawk included. If you find an SRT or Trackhawk that’s been modified, make sure you test the modifications to ensure they don’t impede the SUV’s performance. It’s also important to know that aftermarket modifications usually void the manufacturer’s warranty, which is another thing to consider as you start your search.

When you find an SRT or Trackhawk that you love, take a few test drives to see how it handles. This is a great way to decide between the models and see if the SRT offers the power you’re looking for or if you need to upgrade to the Trackhawk to satisfy your need for speed. During the test drive, be sure to check other features like the air conditioner, entertainment system, and heater are in proper working order. From there, ask for the vehicle history report to get a better understanding of the vehicle’s ownership history as well as any accidents it might have been in. Once you’re confident in the SUV, go ahead and sign on the dotted line so that you’re one step closer to your next adventure in the most awarded SUV ever made!

Bad credit is something that can happen to good people. It can happen to anyone for any number of reasons. But there is hope. Here is how to improve your credit with a bad credit car loan from a bad credit car dealership like Dan Cummins of Georgetown. While it may sound counterintuitive, getting a car loan with bad credit is one of the best things you can do to rebuild your credit rating. Think about it, you get a new or used car, and you get to improve your credit, making it easier to lease a new apartment, refinance your home, or extend the limits on your credit cards.

It may sound like magic, but it truly is not. This comes down to how finances work, showing the world that you are a good credit risk. When you stop by Dan Cummins of Georgetown, our finance team will be happy to go over your various lease and loan options on the next vehicle you buy from us. We are conveniently located and waiting to show you that bad credit can’t keep you from buying your next car.

How Did We Get Here?

For those who have bad credit, this is probably the first question you ask yourself. There are a number of reasons that can lead you to having a bad credit rating. One of the most common is unpaid medical expenses. Too many of us get sick from illnesses, and our insurance will not cover all of the treatment. If you aren’t able to make timely payments of co-pays and deductibles, you could find yourself with open bills that lead to a drop in your credit scores.

Similarly, if you fall behind on rent or mortgage payments, the landlord or bank will take steps to institute eviction or foreclosure proceedings. These, too, can damage your credit. Other things like open lawsuits, unpaid judgments to creditors, and large unpaid balances on credit cards can also leave us with bad credit. Filing for bankruptcy can wipe out most debt, but doing so will cost you up to 200 points on your credit score. It may also lead many credit card companies to close your accounts.

Why Did This Happen?

As you can see by what was illustrated above, there are a number of different things that can happen in your life that can leave you with bad credit. Let’s take a step back and explore the credit rating process.

There are three main personal credit rating agencies in the United States: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. This is different from corporate credit rating agencies like Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s. These agencies collect information on adults across the country that is then used by possible lenders, employers, and landlords to determine the creditworthiness of each person.

While each of the three agencies comes up with its own credit score, these tend to be within a few points of each other for each individual being rated. For example, Experian uses a scale from 250 to 900 points. Any Experian score below 580 is considered poor, while scores over 670 are good, ranging to exceptional for scores over 800. Your score is not static and will go up and down as you make payments, miss payments, and run up balances on your credit cards.

A man is hitting his forehead after looking at his credit score.

Is Bad Credit the End of the Story?

Even if you have a bad credit score, you can still get a loan. All it means is that you may not have as many lenders to choose from, and those that will lend you money may ask you to pay higher interest rates. For example, Experian reported that average interest rates for borrowers with scores between 501 and 600 points was 11.33% on a new car and 17.78% on a used one during the second quarter of 2020. In other words, having bad credit does not end your chances of getting a loan; it only means you may need to pay a little more back on it over time.

If you are concerned about your credit rating, there are ways to get a credit report on yourself for free. Each of the different agencies provides ways to get a free credit report, and many credit cards now offer a monthly free credit score as one of their benefits to cardholders. So, when you go into a dealership, you won’t be surprised when they pull a credit report on you. Knowing in advance will help prepare you so you will be in a better position to negotiate a good deal on your next vehicle.

How Does a Car Loan Help Your Credit Rating?

You would think that adding debt would hurt your credit, but this is actually not true. It is the not the amount of debt that you have that hurts your credit. Bad credit is created by failing to pay the current portion of your debt on time.

When you get a loan on your next car, you will have a set amount that you need to pay each month. Usually, you can do this by paying your loan holder online. Each time you make a timely monthly payment, you demonstrate to the three credit rating agencies that you are a good risk. As a result, they will often raise your credit rating when you consistently make on-time payments. You should always keep in mind that payment history counts for 35% of your credit score, so missing a payment can have a huge impact on your credit.

Furthermore, as your credit score goes up, you will notice that more and more banks and credit card companies are making offers. You will also find it easier to get loans with good interest rates. So, you want to make sure you stay on top of your payments.

One interesting side of credit scores is that you can actually get penalized for not having enough debt sources. This is referred to as having a thin portfolio. For example, if you only have one credit card, no car loan, and no other loans or leases, the credit rating agencies may actually take points off from your credit score for not having enough credit sources. This is another way that a car loan is beneficial, as it will add another lender to your portfolio, signaling to other lenders that there are many different sources looking to lend you financing, whether for a car or just a general credit card.

A person is holding their hand out of a car window giving a thumbs up after leaving a bad credit car dealership.

Some Tips for Getting Your Car Loan

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you are looking for a car loan from our dealership.

First, you check your credit and pay down as much debt as you can, focusing first on amounts that are past due. This will have the effect of giving your credit score a little boost. It can even allow you to get a better deal, such as a lower interest rate, which will put more money in your pocket in the long run.

Second, do a rough calculation of your monthly budget. Start with your take-home pay and then subtract your usual bills like rent or mortgage, gas, utilities, and food. The remainder should reflect how much you can afford to reasonably spend each month on your car loan payment.

Third, check to see if you have some savings in the bank that you can use as a down payment. This will reduce the amount you need to finance for your car purchase, which will reduce your monthly payments.

Finally, contact our finance department for a pre-approval on a car loan. Our friendly staff will be more than happy to work with you, so you have something lined up before you stop in for a visit.

Don’t Let Bad Credit Stand in the Way of Your Next Car

We understand that you may have had some problems in the past. This is why at Dan Cummins of Georgetown, we don’t let bad credit stand in the way of getting you a lease or loan on your next new or used vehicle. Our finance team is standing by, ready to help you get your next car loan with competitive terms that fit into your budget. In doing so, we will help you rebuild your credit so that you will only see your credit score going up while you pay off your car loan. This is what we call a win-win situation for you.

A red 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 is shown from the rear parked in the forest.

Visiting a Kentucky used car lot is about more than just finding a new ride. It’s about finding something capable of handling your workload. Whether you’re a farmer, a mechanic, a construction worker, or the likes, you need a truck that has power. But brand new trucks can get expensive fast, so we’ve got a list of great used trucks for Kentucky drivers that will help you find what you need without going broke.

The GMC Sierra 2500

You can never go wrong with a GMC Sierra. However, if you’re a Kentucky farmer who plans on hauling heavy farm equipment and large hay bale loads, you want something a little tougher than a half-ton. This is why we recommend the third-generation GMC Sierra 2500. These models can tow up to 17,800 pounds, and you can get them with specialized tow and haul suspension.

The best part about these trucks is that you can purchase them solely for their strength alone, or you can go higher on the trim levels and get one that offers handy tech and safety features. The great thing about the third-generation Sierra 2500 is that GMC offers Teen Driver Mode as standard no matter what trim you choose. So, even if you pick the base-level trim, you can trust Teen Driver Mode to help keep your new driver safe. We know that affordability is important for Kentucky drivers, but so is teen safety – especially when you’re teaching your young driver to haul heavy loads and drive with trailers.

Speaking of heavy loads, the third-generation GMC Sierra’s payload capacity maxes out at 4,212 pounds. This means you can haul up to that weight in the truck’s bed alone, and the long bed option gives you plenty of room to haul off-roading vehicles or tools. Keep in mind that the Sierra is a more stylish model when it comes to its exterior, so you’re going to get standard chrome grilles and multiple wheel options on this model. It’s a great used truck model for those who enjoy aesthetics and power and don’t want an old beat-up work truck look.

The Chevy Silverado 3500

When you’re really getting into some hardcore towing, you’ll want to look for a used second-generation Chevy Silverado 3500. This one-ton truck is capable of towing up to 23,100 pounds when properly equipped. We specifically recommend this model to Kentucky drivers who are hauling large pieces of equipment like industrial-sized tractors, which are known to weigh over 10,000 pounds, along with other pieces of equipment such as corn combines or hay balers. Just because you’ve got the space on your trailer does not mean that any run-of-the-mill truck can handle your load. When you purchase a Silverado 3500, you don’t have to worry so much about weight. It can handle pretty much anything you’ll need to tow.

These second-generation Silveardos do include safety and tech features, much like the GMC Sierra does. However, their exterior appearance is a bit more casual. They’re sharp vehicles, without a doubt, but they’re more tailored towards work-specific duties than they are luxury features and aesthetic appeal.

That said, thanks to GM’s safety readiness, the Silverado models also come with Teen Driver Mode. While both the Silverado and the Sierra do have a lot in common, the main reason you’d want to choose this model is if you’re less focused on aesthetics and convenience and more focused on work capacity. You’ll spend a little less on the Silverado than you would on a Sierra.

The Ford F-250

Another top contender for used work trucks is the Ford F-250. We actually recommend looking into the most recent generation, which is the fourth generation. It began with the 2017 model, and these trucks are incredibly tow-capable, with a max towing capacity of 22,800 pounds. The great thing about Ford models is that they do offer more standard features than many competitors do. In this model’s case, you can get standard safety features such as a Post-Crash Alert System, Trailer Sway Control which is definitely important for towing, and Roll Stability Control, which helps prevent rollovers when you don’t slow down quickly enough before entering a sharp curve.

When it comes to cargo, this model’s bed length is roughly the same as the GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado as well. So, no matter which model you choose, you’ll have plenty of bed space. The great thing about all three of these trucks is that they all come with multiple cab sizes and bed length options. This gives you plenty of variety and flexibility when it comes to finding a truck that matches your specific towing needs. Overall, the F-250 is another great used truck option for Kentucky drivers.

The Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger

Now, let’s take a look at a few smaller options. First up, we’ve got Colorado. This midsize pickup truck is still tow-capable, but it’s smaller framed and easier to navigate. While we don’t recommend this model to those who haul heavy-duty equipment, it’s a great option for average towing. For example, if you’re into off-roading with ATVs and side-by-sides, this model can easily haul your off-roading vehicles from home to trail.

We recommend purchasing a used second-generation Colorado. These models can tow up to 7,700 pounds, and you can get trims and kits that are designed specifically for off-roading if that’s something you’re interested in. For example, the ZR2 trim includes skid plates, rock sliders, and it even has a factory lift kit to aid its ground clearance.

The Ford Ranger is essentially the main competitor to the Colorado, and it offers many of the same features. However, this model was on hiatus for a while, so you’ll want to stick with the most recent generation, which launched in 2019. These fourth-generation Rangers tow slightly less than the Colorado, with a max towing capacity of 7,500 pounds – but that’s with the standard EcoBoost gas engine rather than an optional diesel. They also offer Ford Co-Pilot Assist, which includes five important driver assist features. Some of these features include Blind Spot Information, a Lane-Keeping System, and Automatic Emergency Braking.

When you’re interested in smaller trucks that are both safe and handy for work, both the Colorado and the Ranger are great options.

Important Specs to Keep In Mind When Purchasing a Truck

First off, remember that the higher the number, the heavier the truck’s weight. The heavier the truck is, the more tow-capable it is. Lightweight trucks are great for off-roading and light towing. However, HD trucks such as the Sierra 2500 and the Silverado 3500 are meant for big jobs.

You’ll also want to remember that while trucks are tough, most models come standard with two-wheel drive. When you really want the best off-roading experience, you want to opt for that four-wheel drive option. It may cost you a few miles per gallon, but without it, your truck won’t perform as efficiently when it comes to hitting the trail.

Lastly, you can save a lot of money by purchasing a base-level trim. They don’t include all the additional features that are considered modern, and instead, they are built solely with performance in mind. If you’re not one of those people who needs the extra gadgets, remember that base trim trucks can be just as powerful. When you visit your next Kentucky used car lot, be sure to ask about these models and take them for a spin. When it comes to buying a truck, you won’t really know what you want until you’re behind the wheel.
